Some love stories begin with a grand gesture, a chance encounter, or a perfectly planned moment.
Ours began with a dating app, a two-week delay, and a forgotten Lactaid.
We matched, and I may have been the one to send the first message. Then, in true fashion, I took about two weeks to respond. Thankfully, he decided I was worth the wait. When I finally replied, he didn't waste any time asking me out, and our first date was at an Italian restaurant in Denver.
I was nervous. I had recently discovered that I was lactose intolerant, but apparently I had not yet mastered the art of remembering my Lactaid. By the time I realized I had forgotten it, our food was already on the table.
But sitting across from me was a very handsome guy, so I thought, He's worth the stomach pain.
And so was the pasta.
From the very beginning, he had a way of making me feel giddy. When our waiter came by and asked how his evening was going, he simply replied, “She's the highlight of my day so far.”
For a moment, I felt like I had stepped into one of those romantic comedies I loved watching as a teenager.
We talked until the restaurant closed and the staff had to ask us to leave. But neither of us was ready for the night to end, so we continued talking in my car until midnight.
The next day, I sent him a text:
“I have a confession to make.”
He later told me he thought I was about to tell him I didn't want a second date.
Instead, my confession was:
“I'm lactose intolerant and I'm not having a good time.”
And somehow, he stayed.
In fact, he started carrying Lactaid for me. He still does.
That small gesture became one of the first signs of something I would come to understand more deeply about him. He pays attention. He remembers the little things. And when he loves someone, he takes care of them.
The following week, he invited me out for his birthday. We had Kikes Tacos de Birria, and once again, dinner wasn't enough time together. So we went to Topgolf and kept the night going.
From there, he continued to court me, always finding ways to make our time together memorable even when life was busy.
He met me while I was finishing my master's degree and working full-time. He saw how hard I was pushing myself and became one of my biggest supporters. He brought me dinner, helped with my dogs, and constantly reminded me that it was okay to slow down.
Those things may have seemed small, but they weren't.
They were the moments when I started realizing how deeply he cared for me.
I was intentional about introducing him to the people closest to me, and two weeks before my graduation, my mom invited him to dinner for my dad's birthday.
That evening, my dad asked him what his intentions were with me.
His answer was simple.
“I want to marry her.”
My dad loved him for that answer. So much so that he eventually told me,
“If you don't marry him, I will.”
Watching the two of them laugh and talk that night meant more to me than I could explain. It was one of those quiet moments where I could picture a future that suddenly felt very real.
Over the next year, he continued to show me what it meant to have someone truly by my side.
He supported me through difficult moments, celebrated my accomplishments, and encouraged me as I grew into my career and stepped into a new chapter of my life.
But more than anything, he made me feel safe being completely myself.
I fell in love with the way he loves his family and friends. I fell in love with the generosity of his heart. And I fell in love with the way he never had to tell me who he was because he showed me through everything he did.
Then came a trip to his parent's hometown in Mexico.
We spent our evenings sitting at the wave break, watching the stars. So when he brought his camera and tripod one night, I thought nothing of it. Taking pictures of the stars was something he had done before.
We sat there together for about an hour, listening to the waves and looking up at the sky.
Then he positioned the camera toward us.
He got up.
He reached into his pocket.
And opened a ring box.
I was in shock.
The ring was beautiful.
But then he asked me a question that made the moment even more meaningful.
Throughout our relationship, especially during my little “bratty” moments, I would ask him,
“Do you love me?”
And he would always answer,
“Yes, with all my heart.”
That night, he turned the question around.
Now it was my turn to tell him if I wanted him for the rest of our lives.
I said yes.
And then I kissed him and hugged him, still trying to believe that this was really happening.
Looking back, I think our story was always leading us here.
Not because every moment was perfectly planned, but because of all the little moments in between.
The dinners he brought me.
The dogs he fell in love with.
The reminders to slow down.
The way he showed up.
The way he loved the people around him.
The way he made me feel cared for without ever asking for anything in return.
And, of course, the Lactaid.
Our love story began unexpectedly, but somewhere between a dating app, a plate of pasta, late-night conversations, family dinners, and nights under the stars, I found the person I want beside me for all the chapters still to come.
So this story is for you, my future husband.
For the man who told my dad he wanted to marry me before I even knew that one day, I'd be writing these words.
For the man who stood beside me under the stars and asked me to choose forever.
I chose you then.
I choose you now.
And I will keep choosing you, every day that comes next.
With all my heart,
Your future wife
“¿Me quieres?”
Tu futura esposa
